SENSOR DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH SCIENTIST

Opportunity:
Smiths Detection seeks a highly skilled research scientist with education and experience in the design, fabrication, testing and optimization of chemical sensors to join our sensor development team.

Description:
The research scientist will assume a leadership role in the development and optimization of new chemical sensors for direct detection of fixed gases, organic vapors, and industrial chemicals / materials. He/She will plan, execute and complete experiments and projects of considerable scope leading to improvements in the core sensor technology and the development of new sensor materials. He/She is responsible for generating data and analyzing critically sensor response characteristics to understand key performance criteria, such as sensitivity, selectivity and stability, and to select and optimize the best materials for specific customer applications. The research scientist will report to the Director of Research and Development and will direct the daily activities of one or more junior staff members (chemical technicians and research associates). He/She will coordinate efforts with the Engineering Department to improve sensor interface designs, testing capabilities, data reduction and analysis methods. He/She will work closely with the Manufacturing Department to transfer sensor improvements to products. The research scientist must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and maintain each on time and on budget.

Requirements:
Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a closely related science or engineering discipline, or M.S. with 2 to 5 years of post-academic job experience. Preference is for candidates with academic and work experience in the development, optimization and testing of chemical sensors for gases and liquids. Specific experience with one or more sensor type is required: polymer composite or conducting polymer chemiresistors, electrochemical sensors, metal oxide semiconductors, field effect transistors, thermal sensors (TCD, pyroelectric), piezoelectric sensors (SAW, QCM), or micromechanical sensors. Must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident at time of appointment. No phone calls accepted.

RESEARCH TECHNICIAN

Opportunity:
Smiths seeks a skilled research technician or engineer with education and experience in the design and testing of chemical sensors to join our sensor development team.

Description:
The research technician will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of chemists and engineers working to develop a new suite of chemical sensors. He/She will be responsible for testing and validation of new chemical sensors for direct detection of fixed gases, organic vapors, and industrial chemicals / materials. Under the direction of a Senior Scientist, he/she will plan and execute experiments and tests leading to improvements in sensor technology and the development of new sensor materials. He/She is responsible for generating data and analyzing critically sensor response characteristics to understand key performance criteria, such as sensitivity (S/N), selectivity and stability. The research technician will contribute to written and oral technical reports to the R&D department and company as required. The research technician will report to the Director of Research and Development and will interact with the Engineering and Manufacturing staff to transfer improvements in sensor materials and interfaces to products. He/She must be able to handle multiple assignments and demonstrate initiative and a strong attention to detail.

Requirements:
B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a closely related science or engineering discipline. Preference is for candidates with academic and work experience in the development, optimization and testing of chemical sensors for gases and liquids. Specific experience with instrument control and data acquisition systems, instrument calibration, data pre-processing and data analysis is required. Experience with one or more programming environments (MATLAB, LabView, Visual Basic), statistical analysis methods (ANOVA), signal processing, process control or design of experiments is also required. Must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident at time of appointment. No phone calls accepted.
